"Having listened to countless Miles and Trane albums, I'm quite familiar with Mr. P.C.'s work. Often enough, however, I would ignore his playing simply because the recording quality of his bass isn't up to par with that of lead instruments like horns, the piano or the guitar. This album changes all that."Paul Chambers Quintet" is the real deal -- a fine place to understand what the fuss about Mr. P.C. is all about. The album's excellent sound quality exposes the great bass player, laying bare every note, nuance and emotion in both his arco and pizzicato work. In addition, his sidemen here play with equal fire: Clifford Jordan on tenor sax, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Tommy Flanagan on the piano, and the great Elvin Jones on traps. Those used to Elvin's drum-bashing with the John Coltrane Quartet will be surprised with his brush-playing here, which is every bit a revelation.Get this album. If you must, get also the earlier "Whims of Chambers". But this is certainly the better deal."
A minor run-down leads to some major magic

"Every music fan knows to stop at the Detroit junction. It's what's new. At least one of the Jones brothers will be playing. And Tommy Flanagan, he sure be saying something beauteous. Paul Chambers plus four strings, wow, GM engineers could learn a thing or two. Kenny Burrell, in the back, maybe he might even sit in for a few numbers in an hour or so? Plus some young, eager horns ready and willing to blow all night. Then it's over! and we blink away a soft morning sunrise. The hand of love can guide us through another day."
