"WHEN A WOMAN LOVES....what an album. This is Patti at her absolute best. I must admit that when I first listened to the cd i thought it was just ok...but now, I can't stop playing this cd. The album was written entirely by Diane Warren and tracks were produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis; Hex Hector & Mac Quayle; & Khris Kellow. The album starts with THE KITCHEN (patti getting a phone call from her girlfriend) and then moves into WHEN A WOMAN LOVES...a beautiful ballad....Then there's another skit where Patti talks about her dogs...and then we go into the beautiful Tamia remake MAKE TONIGHT BEAUTIFUL..next is IF I WAS A RIVER, another nice ballad....Then we get to the masterpiece WHY DO WE HURT EACH OTHER..this has got to be my favorite song on the cd....Patti sings like she has never sang before with great ad libs by Big Jim Wright...Next it's time to get up and move..and it starts with TOO MANY TEARS, TOO MANY TIMES....and then moves to the FUNKY "CALL ME GONE"...Patti being right at home with Jimmy & Terry..TIME WILL was my least favorite when I first listened to the cd...sounds like a leftover from Cher's BELIEVE cd...but I find myself singing it....it's a very catchy song. The remainder of the cd are ballads...TELL ME WHERE IT HURTS is a very nice song, kinda reminds me of KISS AWAY THE PAIN...then another JIMMY & TERRY produced ballad, I'D STILL LOVE YOU MORE with background again by Big Jim Wright with Lisa Keith & Patti...Then comes Patti's remake of the Taylor Dayne hit LOVE WILL LEAD YOU BACK...Patti takes the song and makes it her own... The album closes as it opens with WHEN A WOMAN LOVES (reprise)..Don't sleep on this cd because all the songs were written by Diane Warren....This is definantely Patti at her very best!!!"
A Voice that Will Blow you Away

"Let's see...Patti is 56 and can still blow away every other singer out there. (an accomplishment all by itself) Her fans will shed many tears of joy after listening to her newest release "When A Woman Loves." Completely penned by Diane Warren (How Do I Live, Unbreak My Heart), When A Woman Loves takes the listener on an emotional journey of love and loss. Patti effortlessly drives home every song, hitting every high note possible. This is a true diva at work here folks! The dance songs are a nice change (Time Will, and Too Many Tears) and definitely need some remixes for peak hour frenzy on the dancefloors. The highlight of this CD is "If I Was A River." This stunning ballad marks some of Warren's best lyrics ever and Patti's vocals soar like you've never heard before. Originally performed by Australian chanteuse Tina Arena, "River" is worth the price of the CD alone. (If you care about pop music at all, you'll check out Tina Arena's "In Deep" cd and hear the original form in all of it's 6 minute glory!) Only drawback on this CD is that some of the tunes begin to mesh together. There isn't as much diversity on a CD written by only one songwriter. But, Ms. Warren knows her stuff and will be around for a very long time. More collaborations with Patti are simply the icing on the cake!"
When a Woman Loves-the story

"Patti LaBelle's "When a Woman Loves" released on October 24 is her best cd and one of the best out there. The cd contains powerhouse ballads that only Miss Patti LaBelle can do and uptempo dance cuts including the AC Urban Radio hit-"Call Me Gone". The story-like cd, which is dedicated to all the women and for the fellas who want to learn how to love a woman and treat her right, begins with "The Kitchen" where Patti talks to one of her friends about the kind of man she wants. Then the cd goes into the title track When A Woman Loves. This mellow ballad is the theme of the cd and yes Patti does use her powerful lungs on here. The nest song is one of those baby-making songs. Make Tonight Beautiful is nothing short of umm. beautiful. It's got a nice beat and it just makes you want to be with the one you love or find someone to love. The nest song If I Was a River is almost everyone's favorite. Yes it is a ballad and yes Patti does work this. Lets see, she holds a few long notes and does one of those showstopping interludes in the song. This is worth buying the cd. Why Do We Hurt Each Other is a mid-tempo song that talks about well look at the title but she does another interlude in here too where she shows off her vocal acrobatics. The dance tune Too Many Tears, Too Many Times really sounds like alot of the stuff that is out there now and Patti does not sound out of place singing it. Call Me Gone is a song to get just to dance. I mean the background vocals and the... this song is good. Time Will is a dance song and a good one at that. Tell Me Where It Hurts is another favorite and this mid-tempo song. Its great. Patti subdues her vocals to just let the beat take over. Ill Still Love You More and Love Will Lead You Back are covers of Trisha Yearwood and Taylor Dayne respectively and yes Patti tears them up. If you happen to like their version...hers is better or if you dont well hers is good. There is a little enlightenment talk for women and the cd closes with the title track to sum up the whole story. If you dont have the cd then go get it. When you hear you have to ask yourself is patti 56? Cuz the diva still has it all-voice and looks. Lovely Christmas present."
Patti Rises Above The Mediocre Songs

"Dianne Warren's songs are almost as sappy as that drip Marian Carey. For every decent song she's ever written, there are 10 that suck. But Patti has what it takes to make a song shine in her own special way.The track "Too Many Tears" is a great dance song, but there are too few lyrics, so we repeat the chorus alot. However, it did make me shake my big ole groove thang."Call Me Gone" is a wonderfully funky song that should be a hit single. As Miss Patti says "Watch me from the back"The title track is a wonderful ballad...but the production and instrumentation on this track, and most others, is average at best, which makes Patti's powerhouse vocals sound WAY over the top sometimes. It's almost like she's singing to Karaoke tapes sometimes. But as always, the voice, the emotion...all that is PATTI pulls this material way up. I think Jam and Lewis need to keep their hands outta Miss Patti's stuff. I'd love to see some production work by Angie Stone, Rachelle Ferrell, Rosie Gaines, the Artist, and D'angelo. And some musicians that can FUNK would be a most welcome improvement. Also, how about an album of duets? Let Miss Patti show these folks how it's done....Patti with Luther, Patti with Tyrese, Patti with Jonathan Butler, Patti with Rachelle Ferrell, Patti with the Artist, Patti with Kelly Price, Patti with Shirley Murdock, Patti with Betty Wright, Patti with Carlos Santana, I could dream on and on.Bottom line....if you're a new Patti fan, this album won't impress you. But, if you're an old fan, it's in there for you. The only way to get the true picture is to see her live, and NO STUDIO CD will EVER come close to matching that awesome performance!"
One of 2000's Best!!

"Patti Labelle is not one of my favorite artists. However, when I heard she would be singing an album of songs written by the greatest songwriter ever, Diane Warren, I decided to give her a chance. "When a Woman Loves" is a collection of 10 songs all centered around the way a woman feels when she falls in and out of love. After listening to this CD once, any misconceptions I had about Ms. Labelle were clearly false. "When a Woman Loves" is one of the most dynamic and soulful albums I've ever heard. I have never come across an album in which every song could be worthy of being a hit! The first single of the album "Call Me Gone" is a perfect example of a song ripe for radio airplay. With it's infectious beat, and catchy lyrics like "you can call me wrong, but honey, call me gone" this song is surely one to look out for. The convection that Patti sings this song with is truly incredible. All I can say is that I'm glad my girlfriend isn't singing this song to me! Other upbeat tracks include "Time Will," a made for the club anthem that is sure to find a home on DJ's playlist at clubs all across the country, and the disco-laced "Too Many Tears, Too Many Times" which sounds like a song right out of the movie Saturday Night Fever! Of course it wouldn't be a Diane Warren written album without her trademark ballads. Many of them are remakes of songs done by other artist. What is amazing is that all of the remakes try to tell the story of the song differently from there originals. If I Was a River is clearly the standout of the remakes. Originally done by Australian pop star Tina Arena, her version of the song was an all out power ballad. Patti version is much more laid back, allowing Patti to get personal with the song that requires a very delicate performance due to it's very moving subject matter. Producer Khris Kellow does an outstanding job arranging this gem, which includes the background vocals of Kris, Jackie Simley, and Carl and Sue Ann Carwell, who clearly give this song the emotional backing that makes it so impressive. Other remakes include the wonderfully written "I'll Still Love You More," which was a top ten hit for Trisha Yearwood on the country charts last year. Patti even tackles Taylor Dayne's number one hit "Love Will Lead You Back." Another impressive remake is "Tell Me Where It Hurts" which has been recorded by a half a dozen artists in the past. The album also features two new Warren ballads. "Why Do We Have To Hurt Each Other," is a soft, flowing love song with a potent melody that Patti picks up and takes to the next level. This is defiantly the most soulful track on the album! However the clear highlight of this remarkable album is the title track "When a Woman Loves." This song brings the album full circle, clearly expressing all of the emotions that each of the other songs hit upon. This song is captures the sprit of the album and brings it into one defining moment that truly is one of Diane Warren's best songs to date. Patti sings this song with her heart on her sleeve, and with such sincerity that it becomes the albums centerpiece, and perhaps a real anthem for all women out there. This album is clearly one of the best of 2000 and accomplishes two things. It proves that although she has grown older, Patti can still sing her heart out! It also proves that the magic of Diane Warren is alive and stronger then ever!!"
