CD Reviews

The Dancier and Jazzier GIlles Peterson
Kenneth Wong | Singapore, Singapore Singapore | 12/04/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The main difference between Gilles and Patrick is that Patrick is not as eclectic and dancier. The selection of music here seems a DJ mixed version of a more underground version of Hedkhandi albums. A pure heavenly mix album for a afternoon at or a house party on a beach. Its tracks are seemlessly mixed unlike Gilles whom usually let the songs just fade in and out of each other. The tracks are dancy yet soothing, Underground yet happy and finger tapping. Time now to grab PF01 and see if it is as good as this sequel."
Great Follow Up

"PF02 picks up where PF01 left off perfectly. For a little background, Patrick Forge is a DJ out of the UK that has featured with a few different groups over the years - most notably Da Lata and even Batu, a group back in the nineties. So of course there is a small degree of separation between him and the members of Smoke City. This release is a bit different from the first Trust the DJ he did in that you don't have as much of the nostalgic soul music. But what you do have is more of a latin vibe here along with some nu-jazz and almost pop like cuts. What pushed me to pick this up was the Hajima Yoshizawa track which features Christian Franck (Da Lata) and Nina Miranda (Smoke City) titled "I am With You". It's an awesome song that just hooks you in and doesn't let go. I first heard Uam Uam by Povo on this cd too. Admittedly it sounds more natural in Break & Bossa 6 though. And there's a splash of the WaiWan remix to Los Ladrones "Mi Amor Es" too. The Gigi cut is cool and John Beltram's tune is a pretty nice summer song. All in all I'd certainly recommend this. There were some songs that didn't get me, like Grupo Batuque's and Swell Session's songs which didn't fit in IMO. But this does represent some songs that were very good in 2002, and some tracks here are featured in different comps like Brazilectro, Break & Bossa's, etc. If you like this, I'd have to recommendcd's from those two series and probably Gilles Peterson's Trust the DJ vol. 1. His is a little bit different - a bit harder hitting. Also, PF03 is out now too. Enjoy!"
