CD Reviews

Ex-nay on the brasilia!

"i have heard a lot of Panacea's stuff at friend's house's and everything i've listened to i just fell in love with. so when i went out to buy one of the CD's for myself, i picked up this one. BIG MISTAKE! 13 out of the 20 songs are basicly silence with an occasional random distorted blast or cricket noises--literally! and then the remaining songs sorta have an implied beat.... but thats stretchin' it. i actually double checked the CD about 3 times to make sure it was the correct band because it was so bad. anyways.....unless you feel like buying something that sounds like they stuck a microphone in the middle of the forest at midnight, stay clear of this album! as for me, im gonna try to sell this one back to the music store! (the one star is for neat packaging design)"

"Panacea made a name for himself recording some of the most brutal tech-step drum and bass tracks of the nineties. He always appeared to be on the fringes of chaos, which lent his music the edge that put it two steps ahead of the rest of the pack as far as the d&b genre was concerned. However, while d&b's progress slowed and it grew to become the average Korn fan's dance music fascination, Panacea accelerated further and further away from conventional musicality.Enter Brasilia: this release is one of several "Archittetura" releases on the Caipirinha label. There were signs that this release was on its way, although at first it may seem like a jarring departure from albums like "Twisted Designz" and "Low Profile Darkness." There is not a breakbeat in sight, for starters. But to those who may have picked up the odd 12" or two, or managed to sneak a peek at his progress via compilations such as "clicks_+_cuts" or "Modulation & Transformation", this may not seem like such a surprise. Needless to say, this is a different beast altogether from anything he's released in the past.Beats have been replaced with pure, unaffected white noise. When the occasional rhythm does develop, it sounds more like incidental interference rather than calculated breaks. In the past Panacea incorporated bits of odd noises and shrill sounds under the surface of the music, but on "Brasilia" it rises to the surface and almost completely takes over.Blisteringly loud, furious, and wildly unconventional, "Brasilia" is more likely to alienate listeners rather than attract them. The connections with the architect whose work is described within the liner are implied at best, but if nothing else at least there's something to read...?"
