And Now For Something Totally Different . . .

"Anyone who's listened to more than one PJ Harvey album knows that she hates to repeat herself, and so far has managed to avoid it. I knew this when I got White Chalk for Christmas last year, but I was still surprised when I actually listened to it.
White Chalk manages to be beautiful, eerie, delicate, and surprisingly powerful. She pute her higher vocals to use to create a lighter, airier sound that matches the lyrics.
Lyrically, this has to be one of Harvey's sadder albums. She's always been fascinated with tragedy as the subject of her songs, but White Chalk hits a whole new level.
She also sounds almost delicate on White Chalk, something I hadn't expected as much from Harvey. But she nevers comes across as helpless or mopey. She's still as powerful as ever.
