"Haydn's overtures are as little known as the operas they largely derive from. This disc and Vol 2 perform every extant Haydn overture, and do so with fire, vigour and inspiration. Driving basses and cellos, scampering violins, martial trumpets and horns, and sharp authentic timpani slicing through the orchestral texture abound in these works. Listen in particular to L'Isola Disabitata, La Feldelta Premiata and Armida on the second disc, or to Feuerbrunst on the first disc.These two discs cannot be recommended too highly to lovers of Haydn."
