Without doing the math, it seems likely that Oscar Peterson has recorded more albums than anyone over the last 50 years--period. A 1993 stroke may have diminished the effectiveness of his left hand, but ultimately not even that could slow the man down. This quartet date, recorded at the München Philharmonika in July 1998, shows his amazingly fleet and fertile right hand can still keep the notes and ideas coming rapidly, even if the misses come more frequently, and he's still capable of delivering lines of exquisite beauty. The program includes seven O.P. originals (three of which are new) plus a thoroughly exciting reading of Ellington's "Satin Doll." It's not exactly news that Peterson's best days are behind him, and this album won't change anyone's mind about that. However, with his longtime rhythm section of sturdy bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer Martin Drew plus new addition Ulf Wakenius on guitar behind him, Peterson can still shine brightly in many spots. Even at its worst, his work will almost always be worthwhile, but the fact remains that there are dozens of O.P. records to buy before this one. --Marc Greilsamer

CD Reviews

Mellow and delightful
03/15/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I am relatively new to Oscar Peterson and to jazz in general, but I'm very glad I got this CD. It is a mellow, delightful performance. If I have one complaint about some Peterson recordings is that he grunts along as he plays and, in some recordings, that can be a distraction. This recording was done in such a way that Peterson's vocalized communication with his muse is way in the background and that let's me savor the music."
Magnificent

"This cd is not as good as his live performance at the Salle pleyel which is what I recommend is a better buy; however, this cd has some songs that are again, incredibly beautiful. Songs like "when summer comes" and "love ballade" are so lovely, you can only listen. Also "hymn to freedom" is a powerful upbeat gospel type jazz song which I consider one of his bests. If you like Oscar Peteson, I would recommend this cd most definitely. These songs are too beautiful for me to describe with words. You can only listen."
A One song that makes the whole album precious

"Peterson's "Love Ballad" alone makes it worthwhile to purchase this album. A precious contrast to the energetic, uplifting tone of the rest of the tracks. Great as usual, but even better because it's LIVE."
