ORLANDO CONTRERAS- "GUAGUANCO"

(5 out of 5 stars)
"Originally recorded in New York City for the Miami based "Teca"label around 1968, this was bolerista/sonero Orlando Contreras' brief return to interpreting the afro-cuban "guaguanco", a rhythm he ocassionally interpreted and recorded in Havana mostly accompanied by an all-star percussion ensemble directed by Arty Valdes. In this recording, Orlando Contreras is accompanied by veteran cuban percussionist Carlos "Patato" Valdes and an all-star ensemble & chorus featuring famed cuban singers Celio Gonzalez and Graciela. As usual with many "guaguanco" sessions, boleros, mexican rancheras and even tangos have been skillfully adapted to the "guaguanco and rumbas" brilliantly interpreted in this great compilation. This CD is definitely a collector's item and will surely delight everyone. I highly recommend it!"
