CD Reviews

A View To a Kill -- Few words -- large impact
02/04/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you are afflicted with the "standing dumb struck" disease of well crafted minor chord music as I am, then three tracks on this CD will simply knock you down. The title song is awesome but you need to be in the beat mood to listen. The best scores this side of the Biblical epics of Mikolos Rosa's melancholy love songs are "Bond Meets Stacey" and "Wine with Stacey". I should leave the comments of the acting to others -- it was overplayed but I have known real (and beautiful) women such as the way Stacey was played so it was not hard for me to believe the story. Its the first time I saw what appeared to be "real" tenderness acted toward a women by Bond rather than pure gratification -- interesting premise. The music helped to provide that appearance."
Interesting John Barry 007 Score

"This is a very interesting score from John Barry. He composed 3 previous scores for the Roger Moore Bonds: "THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN," "MOONRAKER" and "OCTOPUSSY." This was Roger's last outing as James Bond. It sounds as if Barry reached back to some of his previous Bond scores to give us some feeling of nostalgia. "Snow Job" one of the best cuts, is very reminiscent of the driving main title from "ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE." "May Day Jumps" is rather mundane and contains a rehashing of his version of "The James Bond Theme" heard in "OCTOPUSSY." "Pegasus' Stable" has a very good stealthy quality to it similar to "The Spa" and "Switching the Body" from "THUNDERBALL." Two moody pieces: "Destroy Silicon Valley" and "May Day Bombs Out" are strangely reminiscent of "GOLDFINGER" and "ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE."In the action-scoring department Barry seems to have lost his hard-hitting punch. "He's Dangerous" and "Golden Gate Fight" based on "Snow Job" are very weak and uninspired pieces similar in structure to the "yo-yo" attack in "OCTOPUSSY."For the most part "A VIEW TO A KILL" is a serious score. It does not contain the light instrumentation that he utilized for "THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN." The later Barry scores seem more at home with romanticism with a tinge of melancholy. This is evident in the beautiful "Wine with Stacey" and the lofty and somehow nostalgic "Airship to Silicon Valley."The main title song performed by Duran Duran is an excellent piece and is a standout of the series.Overall, the album is befitting for Roger Moore's farewell to the series."
