"One of my 3 favorite Morricone scores - the others being THE MISSION (of course) and CITY OF JOY. The title is actually A PURE FORMALITY. Uncompromisingly Twentieth Century, it has a feel in places almost like the Ligeti stuff used by Kubrick in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. The album features a great, great non-vocalist vocal performance by, of all people, Gerard Depardieu, for the only 2 vocal tracks. The whole thing is European to the max from the frenetic violins in track 1 through the vocal and the mists of unsettling THE THING-like creepiness. A reprise of Depardieu vocal caps it off.



I can't overemphasise how well this whole thing works. It's much much more effective, for instance, than either THE THING or WOLF which bear some obvious subdued-Morricone stylistic resemblence. Much of the lesser-known Morricone which I've heard sounds, honestly, rather tacky and obvious to me but this one doesn't at all - very classy! Picked it up used and totally on a hunch 6-7 years ago, strangely enough very near our other reviewer here at a record shop (Record and Tape Exchange) in Fairfax, VA, and have been enthralled ever since."

Haunting music from Italian master Ennio Morricone

"Composed, orchestrated and conducted by Ennio Morricone, this film soundtrack is music that you may enjoy even if you have never heard of this psychological thriller. But for best results you should hunt down a VHS copy of the film as well. There are 21 tracks:
