I Never Knew You Could Make Techno That Sounded Depressing!
J. N. K | Central Mass | 02/02/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I never realized that Biohazard/Resident Evil 2 had some great music until I bought the soundtrack. After hearing some of its scores, I realized that the music was worth more than just a video game sequel in which the original quite possible had the WORST soundtrack ever. Anyway, after realizing how good the music was in Biohazard/Resident Evil 2, it wasn't long at all until I got this CD, and once again I heard great music...albeit quite a tad different than the original. There are more than simple differences that prevented me from giving this album a perfect score. To start off, there are only four tracks, each ranging from about five to seven minutes in length. Also, there are really only three non-drum-based melodies in this CD, each one used at least once per track. One of those tracks I don't even recognize. And to top it all off, Chris Redfield, who isn't even in the game, makes a cameo voice-appearance in two of the tracks. I didn't even like Chris that much! True, that may change after CODE: Veronica's release for the PS2.However, while being four tracks in length, and repetitive I might add, the music never gets tiring, as strange as it may seem. You never get tired of any of the melodies until you've heard it all the way through, and you regenerate your ability to listen to it all over again after only a few hours. The two melodies that I do recognize are "Secure Location" (the saving room theme), and "T-1" (Scenario 2's Tyrant attack music - type one). The remixes of them sound excellent, with very high sound quality and alignment with the eerie sounds and drum beats. Also, Chris's words, although strangely spoken by him, sound surprisingly poetic, even though the words are also brewing with power and madness. He says some lines in his track like: "Life and death, they both have their purpose. Leaving a trail of destruction is both easier, and more effective when the ultimate goal is not disclosed." Finally, the "Secure Location" remix always sounds hollow, but a good, purposeful hollow. As you listen, you feel a chill go down your spine, as you can really imagine yourself being the last human alive. Accompanied with it is a great dancing beat and awesome mind warping sounds that's great for Halloween parties! All in all, this CD is high paced, poetic and saddening. I never knew that you could have such a wide range of emotions in single short tracks, but somehow it has been done. With this CD, you get four awesome tracks, and as such, this CD is a blast while it lasts."
