CD ReviewsThe Flops are fun schmidty_k | Minneapolis | 03/14/2004 (4 out of 5 stars) "The Flops' album is as quirky and as delightful as I had hoped. Ooh la la has quite a few songs from the Wilson/Munson musical vaults, and although the album is not exactly original in that respect, the sound and feel of the album is different from previous works. The sound seems more mellow than the Trip Shakespeare recordings, and it is quite enjoyable to hear a new take on old favorites. Ooh la la is a nice re-introduction to these two musicians." One problem Shira Burton | Minneapolis, MN | 09/20/2004 (4 out of 5 stars) "I absolutely ADORE Matt Wilson and John Munson, and thus I am a Flops fan. I probably would've given this album 5 stars, except I read the story the other evening and... oh, I feel so mean saying this, but it just wasn't good at all! The writing leaves so much to be desired, the plot wasn't that interesting, and the style (grammar, spelling) was pretty inconsistent. It doesn't add anything to the story.
Other reviewers have pointed out that this album is somewhat unpolished and that the songs aren't anything new. Well, yes, this is a cd of a live concert! The songs are mostly Matt's, and they're fun to hear live and with John. Things are occasionally rough or out of tune, but, you know, if you love John and Matt, you'll get past that. So, to sum things up, the Flops=good, the story=bad. Buy the cd, submit to the Flops, and leave the story cd in the packaging indefinitely." |
