Synopsis

Album Description
Dynamic Finnish pianist and conductor Olli Mustonen continues his acclaimed cycle of the Beethoven piano concertos with the dramatic Third Piano Concerto in C minor and the unique Piano Concerto in D, which Beethoven arranged himself from his Violin Concerto. The C minor Piano Concerto (1803) is considered by many the prototype of the entire genre for the 19th century. The rarely performed piano arrangement of the Violin Concerto (1806) is one of Beethoven's most remarkable works (the first movement cadenza includes a dialogue between solo piano and timpani). There have been only a handful of recordings of the Concerto in D, and this one is bound to set a new standard. Mustonen regularly programs the work, contributing to its growing popularity, and it has actually become one of his signature pieces.

CD Reviews

I am so glad I found this Recording

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I am not a music critic, but I love classical music and my ear is tuned to distinguish between a poor and a good recording. Well, this was a wonderful surprise as I was not at all familiar with the Tapiola Sinfonietta. The piano playing is absolutely incredible, and the sound is clear and dramatic. Now I think I prefer this piano version of the Violin Concerto to the original one. This recording is incredibly beautiful, and listening to it is a most rewarding experience. I hope, hope, hope that there will be soon more releases of this ensemble in the SACD format"
