CD ReviewsAmong the Best MPB (Brasilian Folk Music) releases in '05 Ricardo Carreon Quinones | Sao Paulo, Brazil | 10/25/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "Carioca Singer Teresa Cristina and Grupo Semente are among the crowd that is revitalizing Brasilian Folk Music going in the opposite way that many new artists are traveling. Instead of adding electronica and new instruments to Bossa Nova, Samba and Pagode; they are actually revitalizing traditional sounds and instruments by offering master renditions with glorious traditional sounds. In "O Mundo é Meu Lugar - Ao Vivo", Grupo Semente offers glorious percussions that build the fundamental rythm backbone to the mix of Samba and Pagode the album offers. On top of the contagious beat the guitars and other instruments build a very beautiful environment for Teresa Cristina's beautiful voice. Teresa Cristina has earned her stipes by working the carioca bar scene. Originally from the North Rio borough of Bomsucesso, she won her experience and early fame in the bohemian district of Lapa, in downtown Rio. Teresa met her current musicians at the Teatro Semente in 1978, and therefore the name of the group was born. To date, she has released only three albums: her double CD debut with a tribute to Paulinho de Viola (her debut was nominated for the Grammy to the Best Samba record), her second album "A Vida me Fez Assim" and this album "O Mundo é O Meu Lugar", a live collection of traditional and new songs recorded at the Municipal Theater of Niteroi, a Rio de Janeiro suburb. The whole album is very solid and both Teresa Cristina's vocals as well as Grupo Semente's musical interpretation are outstanding. Given the quality of interpretation is hard to tell that this is a live record. There is also a DVD version of the record, which is probably a very good idea to try. If you want to try a few tracks, try the following: "Gorjear da Passarada", "Candeeiro", "O Meu Guri", a beautiful interpretation of Chico Buarque's song and "Embala Eu", a great song which closes the album on a high note." samba queen | FL, USA | 04/29/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "Teresa Cristina and Grupo Semente are the best thing that happened to samba in the past couple of years. If you want to peek into the future of true samba, buy this album, and the other two she has released so far." Resgate do Verdadeiro Samba Felipe Boreli Filho | Rio de Janeiro, RJ BRAZIL | 06/08/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "After two decades of "corrupt" samba and with the born of the stupid and terrible pagode (once only the name of the samba rounds), Teresa Cristina & Grupo Semente were the first samba heroes in 2002/2003. This live CD/DVD is the true, and new, brazilian samba!"
