Historic Soukous Reissue
barry | Yountville, US, Canada | 08/09/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For lovers of soukous music, Sterns Music reissue of Nyboma M'wan Dido and Orchestre Kamale hits, is like finding fresh water where the world has been drying out. What the folks at Sterns have done here is take the two best songs from each of the original 5 Nyboma and Kamale albums and put them on one disc. Nyboma is one of the great Congolese singers and composers who have been putting out fantastic dance music from the Congo and Paris for the past 40 years. He is currently one of the lead singers with Kekele and served as one of the two lead singers with Les Quatre Etoiles, the best of the Parisian-Congolese dance bands during the 1990s. Kamale was his group preceding Les Quatre Etoiles. This cd features one solid uplifting dance beat tour de force after another, reflecting Nyboma's infectious joie de vivre and silky-smooth tenor stylings. Most of the lead work is done by Soukous Stars guitarist, Dally Kimoko, and it's razor sharp. Bopol Mansiamina's rhythm guitar and bass are as snappy and flat out happy as fans of him have come to expect. But the real jewel is on the track, "Coeur a Coeur," in which Le Quatre Etoiles and Kekele lead guitarist, the great Syran M'benza (ecoutes ca) plays a hook that represents everything that is great about soukous music. Every time he comes round to it, it just lifts you, fresh, flavorful, and technically astonishing. For those who love the music, this is a must. For those of you who would like to see what people who rave about Congolese music are talking about, this is a good place to start."
