CD Reviews

Slow-mo machine speak

"i put this in the deck straight away and thought, now that is strange, i hear the washing machine humming. it sounds to me like someone wiring up an electronics kit and putting a stethescope to the resistors, then the capacitors, then maybe over a diode to see what sounds come out. of the two tracks, colder still is more lively and disjointed. listening to this disc is like i imagine death in the cold, numbing, soothing and hallucinogenic if you can switch off, bludgeoning pain if you try to grasp the textures. the main melody and beauty here is in the beat frequencies from composite sounds that build up and release chaotically. clean, difficult, beautiful. two stars for wierdness and two for solid construction."
So You Think You Know "Industrial Music"?

"I've played this for hard core Skinny Puppy fans, and they freak. THIS RECORDING IS THE DEFINITION OF "INDUSTRIAL". "Cold", and "...(Miss Ticker Mix)" - are filled with machine noises, beeps, blips, and blings. There's audible alarms that WON'T go away, and metallic clanking, clicking, and clonking - all put together in a wonderful, delightful, eccentric mix. Any "rivet head" that you know will enjoy this recording.

The two tracks mentioned above are broken up by the recording's avante track - "Colder Still". A woman speaking in a foreign language, a voice that reminds me of a fantasy-land troll, and keyboard horn cresendos - all make up this avante garde masterpiece. This is superior to most of NwW's avante work, but is definitely not as dark as some earlier works.

The artwork speaks for itself. The front cover is mesmerizing, and disturbing.

This would be a good introduction to the wild, wacky world of Nurse With Wound. They put most other avante/experimental bands to shame."
A Wonderful Tool for Lucid Dreaming

"The title apparently came to Steven Stapleton in a dream, and he agreed to share it with his friend David Tibet, who used it as the designation for a very different Current 93 album. I think this is where Steven Stapleton first began collaborating with Colin Potter. On 'Thunder Perfect Mind' NWW seem to compose and conduct with sound itself, creating the effect of an orchestral masterpiece without recourse to musicians. Cunningly structured to create a sense of flow, of atmosphere, and of an ecstatic unpredictability, it makes the act of listening the starting point for one's own personal odyssey of potential enlightenment. This is surely one of the absolute masterpieces in a career full of wondrous achievement.

I could imagine NWW creating some similarly mesmerising metallic buzzes, pulses and echoes if they were to eschew the tools of studio manipulation in favour of orchestrating the talents of unconventional musicians like Einsturzende Neubauten- the NWW collaboration I'm still hoping might happen. Anyway, this album represents a rich and beautiful tapestry of sound- art to open your head with. Enjoy!"
