CD ReviewsNRBQ live from Ardent Studios in Memphis..... tc@datalane.net | New Albany, MS United States | 12/31/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "When I saw this CD, I almost flipped! The majority of the cuts here are from a radio broadcast from 1972 by WMC FM-100 in Memphis. At the time, I was 14, listening to the radio and decided to sit back and listen to the show by NRBQ, a band I had never heard of. By the time they played Magnet and Ho-Jo Workin', I was hooked.
The show opens with a spacy "Do You Feel It?", then a fine version of "Magnet", followed by "Howard Johnston". Next is the cute "Huggin' Bug", Anderson's "Mare, Take Me Home", and "Don't Knock at My Door", than a jazzy rendition of "Valse Hot". The Q rocks with "Get A Grip", lays it back with "Sitting In the Park", then "Take this Hurt Off Me". Next, a Q favorite, "RC Cola and A Moon Pie" kicks into the lazy "Time and Place". A frantic rendition of the "I Love Lucy" tune, finished off with "Ain't It All Right" and the A Capella "Brothers". Newly acquired guitarist Al Anderson burns it up on several tracks. Early Q member Frank Gadler is doing most of the vocals. Recorded at Ardent studios before a small crowd, the sound quality is good, just as I remember it--better than some of the live tracks found on newer CDs. The CD also includes 6 tracks and outtakes from the first day of the "Scraps" sessions. To be able to relive a April night in 1972, the radio show that turned me on to NRBQ, is almost too good. I'll give it 5 stars for sentimental value, but its full of good live Q, recommended for any NRBQ fan." |
