"Edvard Grieg was generally considered a miniaturist with the majority of his output being for piano his own instrument. This
DG disc compiles most of his meager orchestral offering(other than the celebrated "Piano Concerto"). The "Symphonic Dances" is his most substantial orchestral work. It follows the symphonic 4 movement format. All Greig's dances consist of nationalistic Norwegian folk melodies. The source is the same for the "Norwegian Dances" though orchestrated by the Czech violinist Hans Sitt. These were originally piano duets also done in the 4 movement format. Grieg himself orchestrated "Shepherd Boy" the 1st. mov of the "Lyric Suite" and the remaining four movements were done by Hungarian cond. Anton Seidl. Seidl was a champion of promoting Wagner in the U.S. Without Grieg's approval he attached "Bell Ringing" as the 5th. movement years after the composer's death. Preserving Grieg's most inovative transcription. If one enjoys the dances of Brahms and Dvorak, this light music should not fail to please. The 1986 DDD recording is warm and spacious, but lacks the last degree of detail. It can be obtained for a modest price."
