"Geez - not ALL the SST catalog was hippie drivel! This album is easily as good as his others, and 2 cuts on here went on to appear in the reunited version of Mission Of Burma (although I prefer this version of "The Set Up"). The lyrics are clever, guitar playing is superb and original, his vocals are better than ever (his voice takes a little getting used to), and some songs like "No Warning" are deeply evocative and hypnotic, probably more so than any material that's come before. I love everything this guy does, and this is probably his most straight-ahead rocker short of his Mission Of Burma output. After this, he delved into experimentalism that still borders on complete genius. If you like the modern Mission Of Burma album, you owe it to yourself to give this a chance. The rhythm section isn't as punchy, but the songs are solid classics across the board. A bit more poppy, but oddly picturesque and heady."
