Synopsis

Album Description
Although known today mainly for his many symphonies, Nikolai Miaskovsky (1881-1950) was a great lover of the cello, and wrote many works for the instrument. His only cello concerto, and his two cello sonatas, make up this important recording. Winning First Prize and the Gold Medal at the 8th Tchaikovsky Competition in 1986 was young cellist Kyrill Rodin?s most spectacular success. His victory in Moscow confirmed his reputation as a profoundly musical virtuoso at the highest level, and immediately opened a career for him. Since then, Rodin has been the most sought-after soloist in Russia and the former Soviet states, as well as in many other European countries.

CD Reviews

Great value for great music

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Sometimes known as the father of the Soviet symphony, with 27 symphonies, Myaskovsky was also a great composer of concertos and sonatas. On this cd is his fairly well known Cello Concerto, which is tuneful and always interesting. The performances sounded very good to me, but I am no expert on interpretations, particularly of this repertoire. The audio quality had a noticeable echo from the cello during the concerto, but did not affect my enjoyment.

The two cello sonatas are beautiful examples of the genre. Played finely and with good taste, they are a delight. It is nice to hear these lesser known works.

For the budget price and great music this cd is a steal. The sound is a little odd in places (like in the concerto) but doesn't impede on the quality too much. I strongly recommend this cd and composer."
