Synopsis
Product Description A lapidary and subtle new composition by award-winning Macedonian concert, film and theatre composer Nikola Kodjbashaia exquisitely realised by a broad and mixed ensemble of exemplary and mostly Macedonian instrumentalists. A suite of highly imaginative variations on a theme that meanders with purpose through a unique musical landscape, in which reflections of everything from lounge music, Macedonian folk instrumentals, Byzantine church liturgy, contemporary orchestra composition and exotica, rub shoulders without parody or embarrassment. Constantly mutating, constantly fascinating, this follows the path opened up in Kodjbashia s first CD into a completely personal but accessible musical language. Subtle, complex, profane music, but at the same time easy - even a joy - to listen to. This is his second CD for ReR: the first, Reveries of the Solitary Walker was described as probably the best record of the year by JW in the BBB. Similar CDs

CD ReviewsThe Guardian Review by John L Walters apple man | 06/02/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "World music CD
Nikola Kodjabashia, The Most of Now **** (ReR) John L Walters Friday May 2, 2008 The Guardian This record slips and slides between categories - but in the best way possible. Sure, it's a world music album, largely performed by excellent Macedonian musicians. But it's also a contemporary chamber project, with tracks such as the subtle La Cama de Gaudí and the dramatic Tango de Bond: credible instrumental workouts for large forces, both real and virtual. Tracks such as Coffee Refrain and Amaro Ma Non Troppo 1998, however, flirt with lounge music and tango, respectively, taking the central theme into kitschy but fascinating variants. It is also a personal soundscape adventure for Kodjabashia, who morphs effortlessly from assured composer-conductor through laid-back facilitator to multi-tracking keyboard wizard. The Most of Now is released through ReR, the most adventurous and coherent of avant-rock labels. Kodjabashia is doing little that's new - merely variations on a theme - but the result, drawing on every musical language from modernism to Shadowslike twang, is masterful." |
