"I have heard that the owner of Chhanda Dhara is retired and that he sold off the rest of his inventory. I am afraid that there will not be any more recordings coming from Chhanda Dhara. Buy them before they are gone. Nikhil Banerjee was a very special musician. I doubt that his music is likely to be reissued on compact disc in the future. I have noticed that very few Hindustani discs are being produced these days due to the economy and piracy.
I cannot speak in technical terms as a musician. I have listened to Indian music for years. Like most people, I heard Ravi Shankar first back in the 60's because of the Beatles. I loved Ravi Shankar back then and I still do. He is every bit as good as the hype.
However, once you listen to Nikhil Banerjee, he will become your favorite sitar player. He is just wonderful. His playing is very deep and yet very lyrical. It makes his music so thoroughly accessible even though it is foreign to Western ears and a classical discipline.
I can say that I can listen to the same recording over and over again and not tire of it. There is so much there.
Lastly, I can tell you that all of the Banerjee discs on Chhanda Dhara (I have all of them)are in very good sound. This has also been my experience on the Raga Records discs. I have all of them too.
I cannot say enough good things about all of them!!!! Do not be discourage if you cannot find all of the Raga Records Discs on Amazon.com here in the US. You can still get them from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.de (at much higher prices) or from other sources."
