Synopsis

Album Description
The 2004 release of "Once" is heavier, more melodic, more sensitive and rougher than most of Nightwish's back catalogue and it's certainly another album for a well-assorted record collection. Songs like "Nemo" (the first single taken from the album) ran up high in every European chart, introducing the group easily to new listeners, while "Which I Had An Angel" or "Planet Hell" will satisfy fans of stalwart metal.Includes two bonus tracks "Live To Tell The Tale" and "Where Were You Last Night".

CD Reviews

Once won me over!
Justin Gaines | Northern Virginia | 10/16/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I'm not a Nightwish fan. At least, I wasn't until I heard Once. I saw them live at ProgPower in 2003 and had heard a few of their early albums but really wasn't that impressed. The whole opera metal style just didn't do anything for me. Then a buddy told me that their new album was incredible, so I gave it a try. This album just knocked me to the floor. It's so damn...big. I'm no stranger to symphonic metal, but I've never heard anything quite like this. With the strength of a full orchestra behind them, Nightwish really made the most of their signature style of metal. It's heavy and lush and beautiful at the same time. There are plenty of bands who strive for that "epic" sound, but Nightwish totally nailed it with this album. For proof, check out Ghost Love Score, which is as epic as it gets. Nemo and Creek Mary's Blood are two other favorites from Once.

Once really sets the standard for symphonic metal, and should easily appeal to most metal fans. Those of you who are into bands like Therion, Symphony X, and even My Dying Bride should definitely own this album."
