Metallic Grandeur

""Genetic Disorder" (2007) from France's Nightmare is not mind-blowing, but still compares favorably to the best of traditional metal (old and new). The production by Fredrik Nordstrom is very thick and heavy; it sounds terrific.
Nightmare's vocalist Jo Amore has been compared to Ronnie James Dio and rightfully so (and not just when he sings the words "We Are The Last in Line"). His voice also has a raspy quality that brings to mind Udo Dirkschneider (Accept, U.D.O.) at times.
Track #3, "Queen of Love & Pain", is a highlight and actually sounds like a Dio composition. My favorite song is "The Winds of Sin", a brutal intense thrasher with a definite Painkiller feel - right down to the high-pitched Halford-esque screams at the end. At this writing, you can hear both of these tracks (and two others from this album) on the Nightmare Official MySpace page.
If the ratio of great songs to merely good ones was higher, I'd give this a better rating. Nevertheless, if you love heavy/power metal "Genetic Disorder" is well worth the price."
