CD Reviews

Talented and versatile singer
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 06/14/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Born in Paris in 1936, Nicole began her career as a dancer although she always enjoyed singing. Nicole made a few records in the sixties but the public wasn't ready for her sophisticated style of music in the swinging sixties. Even so, Nicole had some notable successes and four of her sixties recordings are included here. The most famous of two tracks from 1967 is a duet with Pierre Barouh, Un homme et uno femme (A man and a woman). In 1968, Nicole recorded a song in fluent English, I'll never leave you, which is the only such track here - everything else is in French. In 1969, Nicole recorded Quand nous n'aurons que le tendresse (When we have only tenderness), an outstanding song with which to end the decade.

Nicole's singing career blossomed in the seventies as the public finally realized just what a brilliant singer she is. Nicole's voice has the power and range of Barbra Streisand but she is also capable of singing in a much softer style when required. Nicole had a lot of success in France with classic songs such as Une femme avec toi (A woman with you), La Garonne, Emma and Telephone-moi. The most recent recording on this collection, Le blues de businessman, is from 1982, although Nicole has continued to perform regularly ever since, occasionally recording an album.

This collection of Nicole's best music from 1967 to 1982 provides a wonderful introduction to a singer who has had a lot of well-deserved success."

"Truly one of the best French singers ever. A true professional of Music-Hall. This lady with the very classy voice is (as one of the songs here) eternal. Included on this compilation are 'Un Homme et Une Femme' taken from the film with same name, Bachelet's 'Je ne suis que de l'amour' is taken from the masterpiece film 'L'Histoire d'O' etc. This album contains many other goodies, you'll have to listen to believe."
