Synopsis

Album Description
Gioachino Rossini, as an old man, expressed regret over the lost art of castrato singing, an art form that was by then obsolete both stylistically and culturally. Angelo Manzotti is dedicated to the repertoire of Nicola Porpora with the goal of creating new emotions and renewed expressive truths with the same words and the same notes

CD Reviews

Good music-Bad recording

(2 out of 5 stars)

"If you like Porpora as I do one might get excited at first glance. Porpora opera arias with original instruments. Everything is lost in this horribly engineered recording. The church in which it was recorded allows no forgiveness in reverb. All fast passage orchestral work is lost in mush (not a musical term I know). The same goes for the fioriture in the vocal part. Everything sounds like it was recorded in the Astrodome. Or for an analogy, imagine someone playing a Bach fugue on a modern piano and holding down the damper pedal for the complete fugue, played senza sordini.

The vocalist isn't exactly first rate either. Pitch is often iffy. Unless you must have this, find something else of Porpora's."
