"Although complete recordings of all 24 Paganini Caprices are typically appreciated more by violinists, this recording turns that idea on its head. Honestly there are many violinists on the scene today who have technique to spare, but few have who the musicality and sensitivity to use their technical abilities to make music like Leonidas Kavakos. Though the Caprices are "exercises" and/or "show pieces" for the violin, Mr. Kavakos demonstrates that there is beautiful music in more than just the 24th caprice (which Rachmaninoff made famous in his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini for piano and orchestra). For years I swore by the Michael Rabin recording (EMI) of these works, but today it is rare that I return to it. Kavakos is the reigning champion. If you would like to give these pieces a try, there is no finer recording than this one. You will not be disappointed."
