Synopsis

Product Description
New York Philomusica and Robert Levin revisited the fine acoustics of their 1991 triumph in The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in 1994 to perform rare music by Joseph Haydn and Mozart s Piano Concerto No. 23. The record is dedicated to the late George Plimpton and his Paris Review on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary. He chaired New York Philomusica's board. Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 87 is the last of seven symphonies he composed for a series in Paris. Two rarities follow: Partita (Divertimento) in F, Hob.II:23 for six winds, and Scherzando in D, Hob.II:35 for strings and winds. This CD brings these obscure gems to the modern audience for the first time. Robert Levin has revealed an interpretive gift for Mozart imbued with "superb coherence and spirit, [neither of which belie] the modernity of the whole event," (Fanfare Magazine). With scholarly insight into the music of the 18th century, he reveals its unique beauty for our contemporary ears on a modern Steinway grand.
