Album Details
When the Subject Turns to Oboists, his Name is Now De Rigeur: Albrecht Mayer. His Playing Has Both Listeners and Critics Raving, with Expressions Like "divine Spark" Or the "miraculous Oboe" that the German Player Has Elevated to Become an "instrument of Seduction." He Studied with Gerhard Scheuer, Georg Meerwein, Maurice Bourgue and Ingo Goritzki and Began his Professional Career in 1990 as Principal Oboist of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. Since 1992 He Has Occupied the Same Position with the Berlin Phiharmonic. And It?s No Wonder that Albrecht Mayer Ranks Today Among the Most Sought-after Oboists and Has Appeared as a Soloist with Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Along with his Solo Projects, Mayer Considers it Important to Find Time for Chamber Music.

CD Reviews

Albrecht Mayer playing Handel masterpieces and transcription
Wai Kit Leung | CA USA | 03/20/2009

"Albrecht Mayer has been Solo Oboe with the Berlin Philharmonic since 1992. His playing is less dark and more flexible to his eminent predecessor Lothar Koch. He plays on a Buffet oboe. The one he plays on this CD has an ivory reed cap!

I haven't actually bought this CD, but got a German DVD featuring the same recordings. The playing is exemplary, and he plays on the oboe d'amore on some of the selections.

If you can get a hold of the DVD (difficult outside of Germany), don't pass up the chance. You will see, as well as hear, Albrecht Mayer performing the same music as he does on this CD, plus numerous interviews and reed making! Too bad that DVD is not in circulation in the US market.

Albrecht Mayer also recorded with the Sabine Mayer Wind Ensemble. I particularly like their recording of the wind serenades by Dvorak and Myslivecek (who was highly regarded by Mozart):

Dvorák & Myslivecek: Serenades for Wind Instruments"
Wow - consummate musicianship

"I did buy this CD, and there is nothing not to love about this. All the musicianship maestro Mayer brings to his playing that we've all become accustomed to with the Berlin Phil, he brings to this incredible tour de force. His enthusiasm, love for, and impeccable interpretation of Handel's music shines through with all his limitless technique - leaving us breathless as we are once again thankful that such music can be created while we are alive to enjoy it. The lightest, most wonderful Oboe d'Amore playing possible. Words fail."
