Synopsis
Amazon.com The debut album by this much-acclaimed L.A. combo is an auspicious one indeed. Singer/guitarist Mark "Stew" Stewart writes sophisticated psychedelic pop tunes that address painful personal and political issues (racial and otherwise) with survivalist humor, while his band alternates between baroque prettiness and rockist bombast. Stew's most impressive songs--"Submarine Down," "Doubting Uncle Tom," "Birdcage," "If You Would Have Traveled on the 93 North Today"--balance melodic mastery and lyrical invention with a deftness that inevitably recalls fellow African-American pop-psychedelicist Arthur Lee, but nonetheless marks Stew as a genuine original. And the band's cover of "MacArthur Park" puts a menacing contemporary edge on that pop standard. --Scott Schinder Similar CDs

CD ReviewsStart with "Joys and Concerns" 09/11/1999 (3 out of 5 stars) "...because if you start here, you may never want to hear another thing the Negro Problem does, even though there are a few great songs ("Buzzing," for example). Remember those old '70s albums where every song was like a mini-opera, with numerous "parts" and lots of overblown gimmickry? So that a single song could be great till that awful bridge came in that was folkloric or ragtimey or whatever? That happens here a lot. ("Miss Jones" is a good example.) Three stars because TNP is a worthwhile band, even though I'd say this CD is just for the initiated." My favorite album of 1997 Gregory J Stadler | Pasadena, CA USA | 08/16/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "In the sea of musical mediocrity, Post Minstrel Syndrome stands far above. This album takes me places. It has withstood the test of hundreds of listening. Original, humorous and poignant. Stew is a wonderful musical talent. Thanks Stew!" You don't have to pay $99.00 for this! Benjamin J. Neiman | Phila., Pa. United States | 10/07/2007 (4 out of 5 stars) "I won't go over terrain already covered by other excellent reviews here, but I'd like to mention that I found this cd today for 10.00 in a used record store in Philly, I don't think it is that hard to find. And, I love what Stew does w/ Macarthur Park (Someone left their crack out in the rain)...fun stuff!"
