Historically, these performances are significant, chronicling the early career of one of today's most thoughtful and talented conductors. Musically, we can't help but be enchanted and even thrilled with the sound and expressive capacity of one of Soviet Russia's treasures, the Moscow Philharmonic. There's no shortage of virtuosity and energy here (nearly raucous in the finale of Symphony No. 2), diminished not a bit by occasional injections of audience noise. --David Vernier
