"Bette Midler had the big international hit, Cliff Richard had a big UK hit and Kathy Mattea recorded a country version (albeit with bagpipes) but Nanci Griffith recorded the original version of From a distance. Although Nanci wrote much of her own material, this is one that she didn't write. Nevertheless, it gave Nanci a massive career boost and remains the song that she is best remembered for.
This was the first of four albums that Nanci recorded for MCA. Note that all four have been re-packaged as a double-CD in the UK although they vary in style so some people may still prefer to buy this as a separate CD. Besides From a distance, it also includes such great songs as Lone star state of mind, Cold hearts closed minds, Sing one for sister, Ford Econoline, Let it shine on me and There's a light beyond these woods, to name just a few.
Nanci had a style that began as folk-country but she also attracted some rock fans when she subsequently brought other influences into her music. If you enjoy listening to Nanci the folk-country singer, this is for you, together with her Philo / Rounder albums Once in a very blue moon and Last of the true believers. Her more recent music is also of a high quality but different."
