MYRTA SILVA "LA COMPOSITORA E INTERPRETE"
L. Dequesada | JAMAICA,, NY United States | 11/16/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This great CD is a re-issue of an album recorded in Mexico by the great "Gorda de Oro", Myrta Silva in 1968. The orchestration was under the direction of Memo Salamanca and produced by Pancho Cristal for the Tico label. Singer/composer Myrta Silva was in my opinion Puerto Rico's foremost female singer. Myrta started her singing career in her native Puerto Rico and New York City during the late 30's and by the late 1940's she had achieved international fame, especially in Latin America. She favored singing and composing afro-cuban music, such as boleros, guarachas, rumbas, mambos etc. During her career Myrta sang and recorded in Mexico and Cuba with Perez Prado and became a featured singer in Havana with Sonora Matancera until 1950, when she left for unknown reasons and was replaced in Sonora by the soon to he famous Celia Cruz. To this day her performances with Sonora Matancera in Havana are remembered with nostalgia and admiration by many, including yours truly. Later, during the 60's she settled in New York City where she hosted high rating shows at the spanish TV Canal 47, which were "El Show de Myrta Silva" and "Tira y Tapate" the latter was also televised in Puerto Rico.
Unfortunately Myrta died in 1987, but her memory will live with us forever. Don't miss this great CD by Myrta Silva."
Myrta Silva - Life and Spirit!

"Myrta Silva comes alive in this recording. You feel like she's there talking to you and singing to you. It makes me homesick for New York City in the 1950s and 1960s and Puerto Rican family gatherings. Full of spunk and spirit, she takes on life's ups and downs with a "you can't keep me down" attitude. Great rhythms and sense of humor, especially in "Por algo sera" and "La vida es un problema.""
