Album Description About the Artist Formed in 1999 featuring former and current members of Stars of the Lid, Ultrasound, and Cinders, the seven-piece My Education is an instrumental hybrid: part space-rock cacophony, part punk rock sonic wipeout, and part ambient bad trip. Founding members Brian Purington, Eric Gibbons, and Sean Seagler left "dirty, nasty" San Angelo, TX, behind in 1999, relocating in Austin, TX, and promptly found themselves frightening clubgoers with their unique yet unsettling sound, and eventually recorded a two-track 7" at former 16 Deluxe snakepit/recording studio The Bubble with vocalist Joe Covington. Covington was later sacked to make room for larger mike stands, and with the addition of keyboardist Kirk Laktas and second, taller guitarist Chris Hackstie, assumed their current line-up, usual suspects all. "When I heard My Education, my jaw dropped at how incredibly talented this group is. A sixpiece that forges instrumental music that is more about movements than mainstream pop rock, My Education is a college on what you can do right when you sit down to put some songs to tape. Their instruments seem as if they're one with the player, somehow co-existing on this plane of reality unlike any other musician out there." -- Smoother My Education's 2002 debut, 5 Popes, spawned regional tours, college airplay, and much critical acclaim. 2005's follow-up, Italian, fueled more national accolades and caught the ear of many musicians along the way. 2006 found My Education's sound expanding and evolving with a new EP, Moody Dipper, which contained three new My Education tracks plus help from Kinski, Dälek, Red Sparowes, and Teith in the form of remixed Italian songs. 5 Popes was recorded in 2001 with engineer Chris "Frenchie" Smith (Young Heart Attack, Sixteen Deluxe), who has also worked with ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, Explosions in the Sky, Rhythm of Black Lines, and Dumptruck.
