"Four prominent British composers (Howells, Rubbra, Harty and Boughten) provide score for oboe, piano and string quartet on this well done CD.
Renown oboe virtuoso Sarah Francis is featured along with pianist Peter Dickinson and the Rashumovsky Quartet.
Francis' tone is bright, yet dark and oriental at times, and very enjoyable to listen to. This especially comes forth on the delightful Orientale piece of Harty.
As Boughton's daughter Joy was an oboist and this and others were composed for her and she taught Francis some, his composition is most fascinating to listen to as well.
The Howells' sonata melds well piano and oboe turns at solos, with four movements. Originally composed with the legendary Leon Goosens in mind (which he never performed) this is difficult piece to play, but is subtle and warm piece."
