CD ReviewsGreat music in a fine budget recording Sanpete | in Utah | 06/18/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "This is a passionate full-scale oratorio - with orchestra, chorus, and four vocal soloists - about grief and hope. The text is a medieval Latin poem about the grief of Mary watching Jesus die on the cross, followed by a prayer for union with Christ. Dvorak was moved to set the poem while dealing with the death of all three of his children within less than three years. The music effectively conveys the mood and stabbing pain of loss, and the redemptive solace of his faith. It isn't maudlin, just heartfelt and beautifully crafted.
This is the recording that introduced me to this music, and it's still a favorite performance of a favorite work. It shows excellent feeling, and the soloists are surprisingly good. The orchestra is also good, the sound fair, with some minor congestion in the high, loud parts. The performance is one of the shorter ones I've heard, at just under 80 minutes, but it sounds perfectly paced throughout. If you love this music, you will probably want to add this recording to your collection. If you don't know the piece, this is an excellent way to introduce yourself to it. You can currently get this recording used for as little as a penny plus shipping. (It's been released on several CDs. Just search Amazon's music category for stabat mater munih.)" |
