Synopsis

Album Description
Digitally remastered and expanded two CD 10th Anniversary edition of the debut album from Manchester DJ Andy Carthy (AKA Mr. Scruff) including a bonus disc that contains nine previously unreleased tracks. Keep It Unreal is a trip into the slightly skewiff world of the Scruff machine, a one fella crusade against a far too serious world. The Scruff masterplan of unspecificalness takes hold in the form of Keep It Unreal, where fresh summer beats push their vibrant stamen against your honeycomb ears, and happily rollicking basslines stick their cheeky pink tongues in your ice-cream facelines. From slick sunshine slow-fi soul to bouncy beats and choons with references to marine aura, the man who had the audacity to refuse to remix Nigel Kennedy presents his world for your listening pleasure. Featuring the vocal skills of Mr. Roots Manuva, Fi, Miss. C. Gull. Ninja Tunes. 2009.

CD Reviews

Surprisingly solid for what I thought would be an unnecessar

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Although it is not a fair comparison for either album, I recently bought both this and the Beastie Boys' "Hello Nasty" reissues and cannot help but note the similarities (and an important difference). Both albums came out the same year, many tracks appeal to like musical tastes, and each was reissued this year with a bonus CD.

But I was quite unhappy with the "Nasty" bonus tracks so, while I already enjoyed "Keep It Unreal", I did not believe it necessary to reissue the album, let alone with several additional tracks.

Turns out I was very wrong about that. While I tend to skip roughly half of the tracks on the original album, a few of the bonus tracks were good enough for me to put on my iPod. Like so many others, I was originally turned on to the album by the show "Spaced", and the tracks I tend to enjoy the most are similar in style to the ones used in the show. Now, none of the bonus tracks are like those; however, they are largely similar to prime 808 State and some Barry Adamson--other electronic artists whose works I enjoy. Basically, the bonus tracks are more "Get A Move On!" than "Spandex Man", but that is not necessarily a bad thing."
