CD Reviews

Very fine performances
Brian E Bragg | Summit, NJ United States | 08/04/2001

"This is a terrific recording from the early 70's that I recently had the pleasure of discovering for the first time. Having "imprinted" on the Szell/Cleveland recordings of these works, I was initially taken aback by the undeniably grand yet relaxed, at times slow, pace and approach adopted here. But then this richer, less "glossy" view of Mozart grew on me. The orchestra is in top form all around, and it -- and Krips -- seem to truly understand and respond to this music. Subtle dynamic shadings and judicious orchestral balances keep the listener (or at least this one) continually engaged throughout. The remastered sound is full, clean and warm."
20th CENTURY TEUTONIC MOZART!!!

"Rarely do I quibble with the with the good folks over at Classics Today. Usually I take them at their word--their reviews have the aura of words carved in granite and handed down from the mountaintop. Yet this is my second disagreement with them when it comes to a CD in the Philips 50 series (the other was the disc of piano music by Satie).

Too slow? (This was also an accusation cast at the Satie)

Must all Mozart be either spritely or lacerating? Furthermore, I own the Bohm recordings. This one just speaks to me more somehow.

This music is noble.

This music retains its charm.

This is Mozart for those looking inward rather than the extroverted.

I give this disc my full recommendation."
Great Mozart Reissue

"Despite the fact that Philips has one of the best reissue programs in all classical music, the 2 CD "Duo" series, they must have gotten an inferiority complex lately. To compete with recent reissue success stories like DG Originals, Decca Legends and EMI's Great Recordings of the Century, Philips has now come up with the Philips 50 series, featuring 96 kHz, 24 bit remastered recordings of classic albums from the analog era. One of these discs is the title at hand, featuring delightful 1972 recordings of Mozart's last two symphonies by Josef Krips and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. (These same performances are available on the Philips Mozart Symphony Boxed Set featuring Sir Neville Marriner's recordings of the early Symphonies, and Krips' accounts of Symphonies Nos. 21-41.) These performances go toe to toe with the other great versions out there -- Karl Bohm's on DG Originals or George Szell's on Sony Essential Classics just to name a couple. I would probably recommend the Szell or Bohm to newcomers making their first Mozart Symphony purchase (you get more music for less or equal price), but should you opt for the Krips on Philips, you won't be disappointed."
