"Marcel Moyse is one of the most important flutists to have lived.
It is with great reverence that I listen to the master himself with such clarity, knowing that he is long gone. Moyse infused such wonderful and strong character into his interpretation, the music is always excited, warm, dramatic and sensitive when required. His tone is unique and beautiful. The music comes across with near perfect execution and intonation. Flying passages glide with ease, beauty, intent and direction. Legato passages were seamless and wonderfully even. Here's a master class on CD for the interested. Mr. Dutton has remastered the music with a touch of reverb and got rid of most of the scratch, popping and hissing from the vintage records. A brilliant effort. A new generation of flutists can now hear Moyse for themselves. For some reason, I thought the record was missing a little edge, and the sound a little "touched" up. But of course! Scratching and hissing does not appeal to the general listening public anymore! Not having heard Moyse in person, this is as close as I'll ever get. Listening to exquisite playing of Blanche Honegger and Louis Moyse is also a real treat. I love this CD! Now, if only we can get Taffanel on CD...< The Great Flautists > CD's I and II and the Moyse Mozart concerti CD on the Pearl label immediately comes to mind and I would recommend anyone lsitening to < The Recorded Legacy of Marcel Moyse > to get those too. I must confess I did not like the Mozart. And if you have time, why not read Ann McCutchan's book < Marcel Moyse : Voice of the Flute > 1994. And Trevor Wye's tribute to the same man. Heck, also read by Claude Dorgeuille Translated by Edward Blakeman, 1986 ISBN 0 946113 025 copyright Tony Bingham. ( VERY sadly out of print )Where's my flute? Need to practise..."
