Most recordings of the motets include a sixth, the single-movement Lobet den Herrn, but this program includes only what its producers consider the "core of Bach's motet output." Whatever the merits of that decision, the si... more »nging--accompanied by various strings, winds, and organ--is assured and technically flawless. "The Kammerchor Stuttgart is a superb ensemble and are in their element on this CD. This recording shows that a performance can have beautiful singing, text inflection, performance style... AND a musically satisfying effect on the listener.Tone: 5 stars. Unified sound in each section AND among the sections. A beautiful, lean sound that sounds unhindered. Not a driven, offensively pointed sound, and also not wide and woofy.
Text/Oratory: 4 1/2 stars. Diction is excellent, text inflection (attention to syllabic stress) is excellent, oratory (attention to the textual phrase) is pretty good...could be even better.
Ornamentation: 4 1/2 stars. Immaculate ornaments, nicely tucked away and unobtrusive. Could do a few more ornaments in appropriate locations.
Metric accentuation: 5 stars. WOW - absolutely gorgeous. The choir understands perfectly about the role of long and short beats and how they fit into the overall metric scheme.
Overall affect/point of view: 5 stars. Great. Just great. The choir obviously has a unified point of view that affects their stylistic choices, the choices regarding tone, tempi, cadences, ornaments, pauses, inflections, etc. Need I say more?Do NOT allow the absence of the "Lobet" motet to discourage you from purchasing this recording. Such a decision would be a shame!"
