Worthwhile, But Could Be Better

"Morton Gould's music is uniquely American and invariably a fun experience. This set includes Gould's "American Ballads," "Spirituals for Strings," "American Symphonette No. 2," and the ubiquitous "American Salute." The recording is dubbed a "tribute" to Gould, and it is exactly that. The performances are mostly spirited and conductor Kenneth Klein is obviously passionate about this music. (For posterity, Klein is pictured on the back cover, all grins alongside a stoic Gould.)
I enjoyed this recording for the rarely-heard pieces, especially the spirituals, but I have to say that the playing could be better. The London Philharmonic is a fine orchestra, but I get the distinct impression that this recording was made too quickly. While the tone qualities are good and the intonation fine, the ensemble and overall energy seem to suffer. Another "take" and a little more editing and this fine orchestra could have produced a definitive recording.
Nonetheless, it's a worthwhile experience. Enjoy."
