CD Reviews

Good, Not Essential
Tracy Kaufman | New York, NY USA | 11/21/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I'd say his cover of Redondo Beach is the main reason to own this. Very different, much daintier than the original, and worth a listen. As for the other two tracks, Noise is the Best Revenge is respectable, but still not quite up to snuff in comparison to his other songs. And one might ask just how many live versions of There is a Light That Never Goes Out a person can possibly hear in a lifetime, and admittedly this performance of the song doesn't exactly cover any new ground, but it's a nice inclusion anyhow."
REDONDO BEACH: good enough for fans

"well, after a string of somewhat bland single cover artwork, this one stands out as being bloody brilliant! Morrissey posing in a Los Angeles graveyard with Johnny Thunders' vintage guitar! now that is classic! and the music is great to match the cover photo. the first two songs are live cuts and they are very nice. "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" being (of course) a cover song of, quite possibly, The Smiths' finest songs ever. it sounds absolutely magical in this live setting with Morrissey's vocals swooning with finesse and class that oozes confidence and charm. it's one of those moments that inspires chills and requires multiple plays to even begin to absorb the beauty. "Redondo beach" doesn't quite fare so well...but it's nice nonetheless. the only studio cut on this single is the final song "Noise Is The best revenge" and well...it's fine. a good enough song...nothing essential, but makes for a good b-side. i would not recommend this single for the casual Morrissey listener or as a starting point for those who are curious, but it's a nice treat for real fans!"
