"This recording of "The Haunted Manor" is the best available at the moment. The singing is very good, one would only wish that the orchestra was a little bit more forward and some of the details of the score - many of them quite delightful - more audible. Customers with no knowledge of Polish or French should be warned that the LIBRETTO IS IN POLISH AND FRENCH ONLY! There is, however, quite a detailed synopsis in ENGLISH (plus in French, Italian and German). A magnifying glass may be usefull - the print is very small! This record is also an occasion to hear some of the best Polish singers, among them unforgetable Andrzej Hiolski who died just a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, one of the finest Polish basses, Bernard Ladysz DOES NOT SING the SKOLUBA ARIA. This was his "signature" aria and he recorded it in some of his recitals, but not in this complete recording of the opera (here the aria is sung very well by Andrzej Saciuk, a singer otherwise unknown to me). The quality of sound is very good with only one reservation expressed above about the orchestra. Enjoy!"

"I know this recording from the tapes released in Poland some 20 years ago. I am pretty sure that the aria of Skoluba is sung by B.Ladysz but I cannot find any confirmation in catalogues (my original tapes are lost). Even the "Gramophone" database, in the review of this recording, omits Skoluba in the listing of characters/singers. As to libretto, the "Gramophone"'s review (January 1987) states that it is only in French and Polish, but this applies to the LP/CD set released by a label "Rodolphe", a different from the one offered here by Amazon.com. For anybody interested in this delightful opera this is the set to buy - it is rather unlikely that we get a recording of one's dreams in the nearest future. I haven't heard this recording for much too long to afford not to buy it. And once I have it, I will be able to answer many questions."
