CD Reviews

Moe. does it again

"This is one of those shows that should have sucked, but didn't. Hoarse vocals (though they sound fine while singing), blown amps, and problems with tuning - all of these factors usually lead to a band getting frustrated and playing at a level below par. Not in moe.'s case. This show is a killer. The covers are just fun (Havah Negilah??!?!?!?!?!), and the originals are done with true passion. I find that moe. usually takes a few songs to get into their jams - not in this case. In this case, they take off from Threw It All Away, and never come down! A must have for jamband fans!"
Belongs in any eclectic music fan's collection, end of story

"Hard to believe it's been almost 7 years since moe. played this show, 'cuz it seems like only the other day I was listening to a copy on a pair of worn-out cassettes. The band was still a quartet then, and (guitarist) Al Schnier hadn't branched out yet with the keyboards...the result is moe. at its rawest & edgiest, and some of the most hair-tingling jams you've heard in quite awhile are on this CD set.

Don't be decieved by the setlist, 'cuz it might look like standard fare for '98, but it's only that way on paper. To be honest, normally "Recreational Chemistry" is kind of hit-or-miss for me, but on this night they brought out the heavy artillery & blew some heads off with maniacal jamming. Same with "Dr. Graffenberg" and "Waiting For The Punchline"...ordinarily, these songs might not normally entice me if I saw 'em on a random setlist, but on this particular night they were played with authority.

If you're unfamiliar with moe.'s earlier concerts, stop reading this & pick up this CD set NOW. For the rest of us, this show is a nice trip down memory lane...if you haven't heard it in awhile, you might suprise yourself remembering how intense these guys actually got back then...5 stars easily."

"....DO NOT LISTEN TO WHILE DRIVING: moe. has a tendency of turning a 5 minute car ride into a 30 minute excursion. This is a mistake I make quiet often. The jams get so intense that I end up taking a scenic route to get to the scenic route. That is the power of moe. I consider my self a very diverse music listener with an appreciation for good guitar playing. Although there are some warts on this album the highs defiantly outweigh the lows. For example: the jam on Recreational Chemistry, its starts of ok but then it builds and builds and builds. After seeing moe. quite a few times and owning all their live releases as well as some downloads I have learned one thing: moe. has patience. They will stay on a single phrase for quite a while and build it up and transform it to something totally different. That's what makes moe. interesting. Tasty licks and always the question, where are they going to go with this? After listening to an entire moe. show or even just two good jams I get exhausted but in a good way. They are very talented musicians who stay out of the "noodling" pigeon hole that most jambands fall into."
