An Interesting Surprise?

"Well, I've been a fan of The Mission since I first heard "Wasteland" on the radio in the mid-80's. I loved their first 4 albums (through Carved in Sand). For me, "Children" was their masterpiece. I bought "Resurrection" because I was interested in hearing the few new tracks along with a new mix of the old 'classics', but much to my surprise, all of the tracks had been re-recorded. I listened through it and found some very enjoyable new interpretations, Like a Child Again & Butterfly on a Wheel stood out, but I would categorize most as just an interesting experiment by Wayne Hussey (the singer and songwriter). I also found it surprising that Wayne, who personally put this collection together, left off tracks like Tower of Strength and Into the Blue. If you're a devout fan of The Mish, Without You and 1969 are worth the price of admission (if you buy it on sale like I did); if you're new to the Mission, then I'd advise buying the 1994 "Sum & Substance" Greatest Hits package instead because it has the original recordings and a stronger track selection. One last note, I'm very disappointed that Wayne and Cleopatra were so misleading by not somehow labeling this as "remade" versions of the old songs. I probably would have still bought it for the new material, but I feel a little cheated and taken advantage off. I will be much more skeptical in the future when buying from that label."
Inspiring - maybe, Enjoyable - yes

"Although I do not know the mission that well, i still reckon this to be a great album. In fact I went to see the mission last night at a club and it was one of the best concerts i've been too. Re-recording all there classic songs gives a whole different perpective to their music and just because it doesn't sound the same as the original songs, doesnt make the album any worse - i really liked it."

"Ok, I bought this specifically for Love Me to Death, a great song, which was not included on Sum and Substance. I'd only recommend this to long time Mission fans, and only if you're interested in re-recordings that are simply, Wayne. None of the songs are as great as the originals..."
LO FI RE-RECORDINGS...BEWARE!

"I'm just going to reprint L. Breeze's review since it's right on the money. Not "remixes" though. Just Wayne by himself in a friend's home studio re-recording the songs by himself. That's why it doesn't sound like The Mission UK...it ISN"T The Mission UK! Just Wayne Hussey and Pro-Tools. The rip off is that it doesn't tell you that on the sleeve, so you think you're getting a best of collection of the original versions. I bought this at Virgin when it first came out, played it once, took it right back! beware!
"This IS NOT a best of The Mission UK. If I could give this negative stars, I would. Don't get ripped off by this collection from Cleopatra. I did get ripped off. I'll never buy another product from Cleopatra. Shame on you Cleopatra! (the Label) They tell you it's a Best Of, but they are ALL very (VERY) lame remixes. They do not remotely sound like the same songs, or even The Mission UK. The packaging does not say these are remixes.
This is now available as a new release 02/21/2005 as Best of the Mission UK, but it's the same as this Greatest Hits collection from November 2, 1999, just with different album art.
Intead, buy something else such, as Sum and Substance.""
