Synopsis
Amazon.com The dark-hued Old Liquidator owes a debt to Big Star's Sister Lovers, which, group leader/former Young Fresh Fellow/sometime R.E.M. sideman Scott McCaughey professes is one of his all-time favorite albums. Like Alex Chilton's morose milestone, pretty pop tunes are cluttered with dissonant instrumentation. It's as if McCaughey prepared Baked Alaska for desert, then poured motor oil over the top. As with the Fellows, there are still a few yucks to be had, but grimmer sentiments linger over the proceedings like unpaid bills. --Steven Stolder Similar CDs

CD ReviewsA suprising choice R. Dube | 10/27/2000 (3 out of 5 stars) "I got this cd because it was on sale, and was suprised to find that it was not really all that bad. You are sure to enjoy some of the tracks more than others, depending on how much you enjoy classic aternative rock. Their sound is nothing new, however they do their style well. I wouldn't recommend this cd unless you love plain alterative rock." No, really. R. Dube | 11/25/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "This record should have had as much impact as Highway 61 Revisited, Revolver or Beggars Banquet. Scott McCaughey is a national treasure, and just as those other records did, managed to find a fresh take on rock using old approaches. The lyrics are dark, the sound is a little desperate. It proves that sometimes dissonance will resonate more sweetly than harmony. Best tracks: "All the Time," "Story," "No More Glory." Get this."
