Sublime contemporary music: relentless and delightful minima
Matteo | Rome, Italy | 11/24/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The expression "Minima Machta" (pron. Méeneema Màkta) comes from the latinization of a German philosophic term that could be translated as "little powers" or "small works". In its first discographic release, the "Piccola Accademia degli Specchi" (A. Amorino, A. Cavallari, D. Cedrone, C. Di Pietro, V. Marchitelli, G. Rosati) recorded eleven of these nugae, written by three different composers deeply linked with minimalism and postminimalism: Philip Glass, Wim Mertens and Matteo Sommacal, whose compositions are recorded here for the first time. "Minimamachta" was first presented in November 2004 on the occasion of the 5th International Festival of Contemporary Music "Luigi Nono" in Trieste (Italy)."

"This young and exuberant Italian ensemble is made up of some of the finest virtuosi on the scene in Rome today. They perform frequently throughout Italy and regularly premiere new works. They have a penchant towards American composers especially the music of Glass and Reich and, it shows in this masterful CD of minimalist and post-minimalist interpretations. I love this CD and was first introduced to their music on the WNYC radio show "New Sounds". Coincidentally, i also heard "Minimamachta" on the syndicated NPR show ECHOES several times and then had to get this CD!"
