Floating on a cloud of joy...

"Oh how great the view is from up here! Thanks to the internet for the chance to hear this one.

In this wonderful release you get it all : mellow, upbeat, minimalist... I love finding recordings like this.

A truly rich live experience.

Enjoy. :)"

"Impulse Records recorded Milt's group during an August 1-2, 1969, engagement at Shelley's Manne Hole and released the results on two LPs; this is the first volume. Teddy Edwards plays tenor and is definitely not having a good night. Ray Brown is featured heavily on TENDERLY, and also on BLUES IN THE BASSMENT, a tune he wrote. Best on the date is pianist Monty Alexander who plays with fire and determination lacking in some of the other players; he is especially noteworthy on WHEELIN AND DEALIN. I'm not sure the second LP ever made it to CD, but it's not any better. Not a memorable outing for these guys."
A NICE PAIRING OF 2 (TWO)LEGENDS THAT PLAYED TOGETHER ONCE A

"Through the years these 2 (Two) recorded together again in the later years, but it was what took place these 2 (Two) nights at Shelly's Manne-Hole (California) that got people's attention!. On this Impulse release we find our heros recorded 'Live' in a intimate setting. The Compact Disc opens up a Jazzed-Up version of "Frankie And Johnny", Plus Steller performances of: "Blues In The Bassment", and the Title Cut "That's The Way It Is". This entire Compact Disc clocks in at about 48:00 (Forty-Eight Minutes). There was even a Second Album released (On VINYL) a few years later under the title of: "Just Way It Had To Be", So I'm pretty sure MCA (Universal Music Group) could have came up with some Bonus Tracks and/or Alternate Takes from the 2 (Two) nights of recordings from this from this engagement! Even a Two-Fer Package or a Double Disc would have been a real treat! But for now you'll just have to live with (And enjoy) THIS Compact Disc! Oh! Another one of the albums highlights is the apperance of a young Monty Alexander on Piano! (Yes!, That Monty Alexander!!!)"
