CD Reviews

The color is not too vibrant

"To say that the debut solo album from Miguel 'Petalpusher' Migs has been highly anticipated would be a major understatement as the hype has been building since early Spring and expectations float among the clouds. Migs' remixing credentials: solid. Big ups and deep head-bobs for his work on the Nude Dimensions series. People demand a lot from Miguel. While Naked Music co-founder Jay Denes' 'Beautiful Tomorrow' got the critic's nod earlier this year, would this album do the same? I'm not convinced. Miguel knows his way around the studio as the production and arrangement are tight. But there is no definable peak and its consistent mid-tempo, soul groove will appeal mostly to the ladies. Deep heads out there will be disappointed. 'Days of Color' is the most qualified remixing candidate for the dance hall. 'Don't let me Down' and 'Waiting' was very R&B and pop-like. A stripped down version of 'Breakin It Down' is refreshing and almost as super soulful as 'The One'. Miguel's strength is clearly not in the lyrics with extra syrupy vocals such as 'before you break my heart, think it over.' Uh ' what? Next thing you know, will Migs be hanging out with Carson Daly on Total Request Live? No thanks. Not for me. I hate to knock Migs, but I think we were all expecting just a little more. After all, Miguel helped Naked Music set one of the standards when it comes to deep house flavors. The complete lyrics are included in the liner notes. Total time: 74 minutes. While I was hoping for some deep thumps and serious head-bobbing grooves, instead it was too sugary sweet for my taste buds.POSTSCRIPT: Upon my initial purchase, I listened to it non-stop for over a week to make sure I hadn't missed something. Was I just 'not getting it'? Instead, this album has been collecting lots of dust and hasn't seen my turntable since then. Over one month after I bought it, my opinion still hasn't changed. Grade: Not too vibrant."
VERY COLORFUL, "COLORFUL YOU"!!!

"I have had this CD for four days now and can't stop listening to it!! Miguel Migs is much deeper musically than what I've heard from his remix work on "Nude Tempo Volume 1" and on some of the stuff on the "Nude Dimensions" series. The truly colorful, "Colorful You" surprised me to say the least. Every song--and I do mean EVERY song, despite what these reviews have been saying--are beautiful, exotic and funky masterpieces of a clearly experienced and talented producer, songwriter, mixer and musician. With poignant--yet sometimes cliched--lyrics and sophisticated vocals from the soulful chanteuse, Lisa Shaw, added to groovy-thumpin' bass lines, embellished with live instrumentations, "Colorful You" only becomes that much more entertaining and...well...colorful. Migs creates a variety of musical patterns ranging from the sexy, latin opener of "Introseduction" to the "good" R&B sounds of "Waiting", "Breakin' It Down", "One Wish for Me", "Don't Let Me Down" and "The One" to the Reggae-tinged "Inspirational Interlude" and "Messages" to the Deep, Soulful, Jazzy House of "Brand New Day", "Think It Over", "The Night", "Days of Color", "Soul Vibe" and "Surrender". I'm glad "Colorful You" wasn't a mix CD or a totally uptempo affair. I lost interest in Mig's "Nude Tempo" mix CD because all of the songs sounded alike. The songs on "Colorful You", however, can stand on their own and really show that there's more to Mig's than just that pretty face."
SO FRESH N' SO CLEAN!

"Okay this ALBUM, not CD is simply fabulous! Miguel's production shows that he's got game. "Waiting" is my favorite track, but I respect Miguel as an artist and DJ, so all the stuff he comes out with are basically favorites. I guess before I go on endlessly about how good this ALBUM is, I should get to my point. If you're contemplating whether you should buy this album and your the type of person who's mature, got a good ear, studies house music, can shake your butt or even tap your foot, then this album is definitely worth listening to. For all the crappy music out there, give your ears some listening pleasure and listen to some well produced and arranged house.I am aware that those not musically inclined just want a CD and don't know too well the definitions of some "labels", so here's my pretty accurate stereo-type:If you like jungle, hard drum n' bass, happy hardcore, really progressive house, then this album isn't for you. You'll think this is too slow. I like to think it's "chilled". hehe!If you've been into house and know the classics, if you like to go to clubs that are more "loungy" than glowsticks and whistles, then GET THIS ALREADY AND STOP READING MY REVIEW!You won't regret it! "Miguel, GREAT WORK!""
