Climb Aboard the Rumbletrain
J. Merritt | 12/06/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"These guys were all over college radio in the late 80's and early 90's, so I'm a bit surprised to find that their best album (in my opinion) is in the "Shame It's Out-of-Print" File. I've checked out their other releases, but none matched the energy and rumbling sound of this 1989 release. This was the Mighty Lemon Drops taking their Alarmish roots and infusing them with a loud, brassy, drum-heavy drive, the kind of songs that must have been a blast to hear live. I guess they just hit a groove in terms of writing catchy, charging riffs on this record, because they were never really this fun again. A great mood album to put on and pick yourself up."
Good band, bad name.

"This is one of those great late 80's alternative bands I liked, similar to The Church, Echo and the Bunnymen, or The Ocean Blue. Not really punk or goth, but dark pop. These guys fashion was like the clean-cut Ramones, on this album anyway. Guitar, some horn, and good enough singing and lyrics. "Where do we go from heaven" and "Second time around" are both great songs. They do have a "hits" album out, which I would actually get before this if I was new to the band. But this is a good example of the 1989 alt-scene too."
